CHAPTER 14
“The End.”
Quinn set down her pen and blew on the ink to dry it before shutting the book. She’d bought a blank book at the huge warehouse craft store a couple towns over. Sturdily bound, it would hold up when leafed through several times a day. Well, at least it was her hope that Lily loved the book so much she looked through it often.
Lily had been telling Quinn stories about Misty Blossom from the first day they read Nanny’s book on flower fairies together. Misty was Lily’s fairy. She visited often, having her own spot in Lily’s bedroom. But her friends lived in the garden and she missed them terribly if she spent too much time inside the house.
So Quinn had taken snippets from all of Lily’s anecdotes and compiled a storybook, complete with detailed drawings of Misty Blossom’s adventures. The more she drew, the more she wanted to draw. And now that the book was finished, her fingers itched to get started on the next one.
She glanced at the closed door to her bedroom. She was hungry. She’d heard Jonah put Lily to bed a while ago. With any luck, he had sequestered himself in his own room. Or more likely, he was downstairs stripping her paint job from his damned cradle, trying to salvage his precious baby. Quinn’s heart squeezed painfully. She’d wanted to help make it special. But he was right. It was his gift to Thea and Ken. She should have asked.
A soft tap at her door had her scrambling off the bed. Her hands went automatically to her hair, smoothing down the flyaway strands. Her eyes went to her bare legs and she then frantically searched for the jeans she’d removed earlier.
“Just a minute.” There. Hanging from the bedpost. Hurriedly, she shimmied back into them, took a deep breath and opened her door.
Jonah stood in the hall, a wooden tray in his hands. A steaming bowl of chowder, side salad, and a stack of bread slices weighed it down. Ooh, there was even a tall glass of chocolate milk. Quinn’s mouth watered as she reached for the tray. Instead of handing it over, Jonah nudged his way through the door.
He placed the tray on the bed, and though it was sturdy enough, Quinn was scared of what might happen to her book if anything spilled. She started to snatch it up, but he’d spotted it and looked intrigued.
“May I?” He lifted the book and paused, glancing at her with an arched brow.
“Be my guest.” Quinn was more interested in feeding her stomach than fighting with Jonah. She left him to the book, climbed up onto the bed and tucked into the chowder she’d really been looking forward to since that afternoon.
“Misty Blossom was a flower fairy,” Jonah read aloud.
His words were drawn out and hesitant, but he was reading. Pride welled in her chest. She didn’t want him to stop, so she pretended to focus on her dinner, all the while listening intently.
